Christmas in Minnesota...

I arrived in Minneapolis on Tuesday evening, after flying through Atlanta. No delays and no snow storm (as I had heard) when I landed in Minneapolis.

Wednesday I went to Nerstrand to pick up our ham and wrapped a few gifts I brought with me from Florida. We went to 5 pm church, then came home for our traditional Christmas Eve dinner--complete with ham and roadhouse potatoes. We opened our gifts and had a nice evening.

Thursday morning David and I made the food to take to his sister, Dawn's house for Christmas Day with his family. We had another great meal and a nice afternoon, before people took off for the afternoon movie. I headed home and began packing some of the Christmas decorations.

Friday I met Lorie and Barb for breakfast at the Tavern. Brooke and I ran a few errands during the afternoon before we met Marilyn and Jason Phelps for dinner at the golf club.

Saturday morning I met Dot for breakfast at the Quarterback Club, before heading to the Cities for a quick errand at Best Buy. Saturday night, our family met the Petersons at Buffalo Wild Wings in Apple Valley. It had been way too long since we had dinner with Don and Jane--always fun to catch up with them and the kids.

Sunday I finished packing a few things before the girls took me to the airport. My return flight out of Minneapolis was delayed, so I went stand-by on another flight to Detroit, so I wouldn't miss my connecting flight to West Palm. We landed at 12:15 so by the time I got home and to bed...it was well after 1:30 a.m. Eventhough it was a short night, it will be a quiet few days at work...so should be good for getting lots of year-end work wrapped up.

Looking forward to Brooke's arrival tonight!

Last weekend before Christmas...

This was my last weekend in West Palm Beach before heading to Minnesota on Tuesday for Christmas. Friday night I went out to Juno Beach for a walk on the beach before dark...it was a perfect night. Then I went to Kathy's house to eat pizza and watch a movie...a great way to end the week.

Saturday I played golf at PGA National on the Champ course with seven colleagues from work. We played at 7:50 and were done before noon--always nice to have the pace of play move along on a Saturday morning. In the afternoon, we went for a walk along the beach then out to lunch. It was a "Chamber of Commerce" day--with perfect weather, sunshine and no rain!

Sunday Kathy and I met for breakfast at the Juno Beach Cafe then went for our walk along the beach. Sunday afternoon, Drew and I met at the driving range then went out and played golf on the Champ course...there was no one out golfing so we cruised right along and played as many holes as we could.

I have one suitcase packed with gifts and need to get ready to brace the cold weather in Minnesota!

St. Augustine, Florida

I spent this weekend in St. Augustine, Florida--about three hours north of where I live in West Palm Beach. On Friday night, I took the tour of the Christmas lights around the city on a little train that included singing Christmas carols and wearing three-dimensional glasses...it was cool and a bit hokey riding around the town singing and wearing 3-D glasses--but still quite festive.

Saturday I visited the World Golf Hall of Fame. There was a special exhibit honoring Bob Hope and his contribution to golf...it was pretty amazing to see more than 400 artifacts, 300 images, a special audio tour and videos shown on monitors throughout the display celebrating Hope's career in entertainment, his relationships with U.S. Presidents, his devotion to the men and women of the military and his love of golf. A second exhibit is a tribute to Jack Nicklaus--celebrating the stories of The Golden Bear's benchmark career in golf and his successful career and life off the course. My favorite part of the tour was the locker room--special lockers with keep sakes from each member of the Hall of Fame. The World Golf Hall of Fame includes an IMAX Theater--which because of Christmas was showing The Polar Express...a great movie to see in IMAX!

Saturday night we had dinner out on the water--another cool evening but since there was a boat parade, it was a fun night to be out on the town.

Sunday was a three hour drive back to West Palm Beach and getting ready for another week at work. I can't believe Christmas is just ten days away!

PGA Holiday Party

This has been a crazy busy week at work--we had the PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit in Port St. Lucie from Dec. 3-7...complete with a Play Golf America Day on Wednesday and the PGA/USA Today Hotline on Thursday.

Thursday night David flew in for a long weekend in West Palm Beach. Saturday afternoon we went to the Breakers and walked around downtown West Palm Beach. Saturday night we had our PGA Holiday party at PGA National...a fun evening of good food with good friends.

Sunday morning David and I met Kathy for breakfast at the Juno Beach Cafe then walked along the beach. David and I drove around a bit in the afternoon--checking out neighborhoods in Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens.

Sunday night we had dinner and I got ready for another week at work--while David got ready to return to cold Minnesota on Monday. It's been fun to have him here for the weekend and to show him around the area.

Thanksgiving in Minnesota

I packed a lot of things into my past five days in Minnesota. I arrived Tuesday night without any delays...always good when flying from a warm climate to a cold climate on the busiest flying days of the year.

Wednesday I spent the day going from one appointment to the next--including eye doctor, dentist and haircut! Good to knock that stuff all out in one day--in addition to multiple trips to Cub to prepare for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday.

On Thanksgiving we hosted dinner for David's family--with 27 people coming over for the afternoon. The best part about hosting is getting the left-overs! In true Finger family tradition, Thanksgiving Day concludes by going to a movie--my favorite time to stay home and have the house to myself! I began to get some Christmas decorations out as I put the Thanksgiving ones away.

Friday we ran a few errands to the Cities, then had dinner at the golf club.

Saturday we put our Christmas tree up as a family--another fun tradition! It takes some time to assemble the 14' tree, but the end result is always worth it. Also the fun memories of unpacking special Christmas ornaments to hang on the tree.

Sunday morning the family took me back to the airport for my 11 a.m. non-stop flight back to Ft. Lauderdale. While it's a 30 minute drive from the Ft. Lauderdale airport to Wellington, it's nice to have a non-stop flight and avoid cold weather airports with possible delays. I met a friend for dinner on my way home.

It was great to be home and spend time with family and friends...I'll return again in three and a half weeks!

The ADT at Trump International

Saturday I went to the LPGA ADT Championship at Trump International. It was fun to watch the 16 players and to walk around at Trump International. We were disappointed that Annika and Lorena didn't make the cut to play the weekend, but it was still great to get so close to the other players and watch them.

Saturday night I attended the wedding of a colleague in Palm Beach Gardens, then went to the reception at Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter. It was such a nice event and fun to be included with a few other PGA colleagues.

Sunday morning I had breakfast at the Juno Beach Cafe and walked along the beach. I spent the afternoon hitting golf balls at PGA National for a few hours, then went to the Gardens Mall to start my Christmas shopping.

Soon time to think about packing my stuff to head to Minnesota for Thanksgiving on Tuesday.

Another golfing weekend

I started my weekend on Saturday morning with my walk along the beach, before playing golf. I spent this weekend playing 36-holes of golf with friends from Minnesota who winter in the Ft. Meyers area--Vicki and Larry Austad and JoAnne Henry. We played golf on Saturday on the Palmer course, then went out to celebrate JoAnne's 70th birthday...we went to Duffy's after golf to watch the Minnesota-Wisconsin football game--not too much to cheer about there. We had dinner at the Waterway Cafe, then went back to Duffy's, as Joanne left her jacket there.

Sunday we played the Haig course in the morning. After golf, Vicki, Larry and JoAnne headed back to Ft. Meyers and I ran a few errands before heading home for the night. It was a perfect weekend weather-wise...temps in the 70s and sunny. Perfect golf weather! It was fun to spend the weekend with the Austads and JoAnne--I look forward to another visit to the "West Coast" to see them this winter.

Arizona and California

The past five days have been non-stop. I left West Palm on Tuesday afternoon and flew to Minneapolis to meet Kelsey and Brooke, so the three of us could fly to Phoenix. Not the best use of time to go from Florida to Arizona via Minnesota, but it was great for accumulating frequent flyer miles, plus fun to travel with the girls.

Wednesday morning we headed west on I-8 for San Diego. After five hours of desert, sand, more desert and three boarder patrol stops, we arrived in San Diego. We ate dinner, sat in the hot tub and watched some TV before the sleep-deprived mom called it quits at 8:30 p.m.

Thursday morning we took a quick jaunt to Torrey Pines, since we were ten minutes away, the golfing mom had to see where the US Open was held this past June. After a few photos, we headed to the San Diego State University campus. This is Kelsey's first choice for a school and following the tour, she is even more excited about SDSU.

After a quick stop at Subway, we jumped back in the car for our five hour drive back to Phoenix. We arrived in Phoenix just as the sun was setting and it was a great sight to see the mountains lit up as the lights came on in the valley. We met Lance and Carol Jacobson for dinner in Cave Creek before going to their house to spend the night.

Friday morning we left for Tempe and our tour at Arizona State University. It was a nice campus and a beautiful day to be out walking around. Kelsey plans to major in Economics or Marketing and both schools have great business schools for her. Of course the weather at both schools is a big factor as well...probably won't need to pack the winter clothes, if she's headed to California or Arizona.

Friday night I attended the PGA of America Annual Meeting and President's Dinner at the JW Marriott in Scottsdale. It was a great party for outgoing PGA President Brian Whitcomb and fun to see friends from the Minnesota Section as well as PGA HQ colleagues.

I left Saturday morning at 8:45 for West Palm and the girls flew back to Minneapolis at 10 a.m. Of course they had a three hour non-stop flight and I toured Memphis and Atlanta before arriving in West Palm at 10 p.m. It was a fun time and I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving in a few weeks...

Today I walked along the beach, stopped in the office for an hour, then met a colleague for lunch. It was great to sit outside and chat about her upcoming wedding and enjoy being back in Florida.

Living in Wellington...

I spent this weekend moving from my two-bedroom condo to a house in Wellington--about 15 minutes south of the PGA. Wellington is a great community known best as being the home to the Polo International Hall of Fame--a mere few blocks from where I live.

Friday night was my first night there, which also happened to be Halloween...so I spent the first two hours answering the doorbell and giving out candy! The biggest surprise was that people here just sit in lawn chairs in their driveway to hand out the candy! Also many parents following the kids pulled wagons--complete with coolers containing their adult beverages!!

Saturday I ran a few errands, got in a walk on the beach and hung out with a friend to watch the Iowa football game. Sunday was another walk on the beach, followed by some much needed time at the practice range at PGA National.

Tuesday I leave for Phoenix to meet Kelsey and Brooke to go look at colleges. Looking forward to spending some time with the girls out West!

Golfing at PGA National

Saturday we walked early since I had a 9:40 tee time at PGA National. I played golf with Ron, Paul and Jon--all three colleagues from the Consumer Marketing/Player Development department at work. We had a good time...the weather was great and the golf was just okay...a few too many bogies today, but still fun to get out and play.
After golf, Ron, Jon and I went to the Yard House for lunch and sat outside on the patio and watched the Florida football game.

Sunday we walked after breakfast--going another three miles along the beach. We are starting to see the same people walking, running and roller-blading...kinda funny to actually recognize people along our walk! This afternoon I took a load of stuff to Pam's in Wellington--so I have less stuff to move on Friday. Somehow I have accumulated alot of stuff in the ten months I've been in Florida!

Hangin' out at Juno Beach

It was another weekend at Juno Beach. We kicked the weekend off by having beach therapy at Juno Beach on Friday night, followed by dinner at the new Mexican restaurant, La Bamba. Always fun to relax on the beach and end the night by trying out a new place to eat.

Saturday Kathy and I walked along the beach, then I went to the pool in the afternoon before having Susan and Kathy over for dinner. We had chicken & rice, broccoli salad and Susan made pumpkin bread and apple pie for dessert. We watched a movie after dinner and moaned and groaned about eating too much!

Sunday seems to be a standing 9 a.m. breakfast at the Juno Beach Cafe. Then we walked about three miles before I headed home to get organized for my upcoming move to Wellington. I'm getting inspired to clean and organize so I don't have so much stuff to move!

Brooke's Confirmation

It was another fun-filled weekend in Northfield as I went home for Brooke’s Confirmation. I flew home on Thursday afternoon, which gave me all day Friday to get the house and food ready for Sunday. My parents arrived on Saturday evening and helped us get ready.

Sunday we had 35 people attend the service at the church, then they all came back to our house for dinner. We fixed a ham, David’s homemade scalloped potatoes and assorted salads (but no “Lutheran” red jello!) It was fun to see Brooke’s Godparents and many family members and friends again. The fall colors and leaves were at peak this weekend—so that made for a nice fall atmosphere as well.

This morning I took my usual 6 am flight from Minneapolis thru Detroit to West Palm. Both flights were on-time, so I was able to get to work by 1 pm to get half a day of work in. Always good to go back to Minnesota and just as nice to return to West Palm.

Happy Birthday to my dad and my sister today, too!

Rained out again...

Today I played golf w/Kerry Haigh and Tim Shank from the PGA. Kerry is the managing director for tournaments and runs the Sr. PGA Championship, PGA Championship and most recently the Ryder Cup. Tim is the managing director of finance--so it was a thrill for me to play with more people from the PGA HQ staff. Unfortunately, once again for a second week in a row, we made it as far as the 7th hole on the Palmer course before we were rained out. About 4 p.m. the rain finally cleared, so I ran some errands and went to dinner at CPK.

Sunday we met at Juno Beach Café for breakfast, before our 3 mile walk. I spent the afternoon relaxing at the pool and packing for my trip to Minnesota on Thursday. Looking forward to returning for Brooke's confirmation next weekend.

Lunch with Nancy Lopez

Today I attended the Hispanic Heroes Luncheon at the Crowne Plaza in West Palm Beach. The luncheon was sponsored by The Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beach County in conjunction with the LPGA's 2008 ADT Championship. Nancy Lopez was honored at the luncheon with a Hispanic Heroes Award for being a Hispanic pioneer who broke down barriers allowing Hispanic women to realize their dreams of becoming a professional golfers.

I had a chance to visit with Nancy briefly before the luncheon began. We visited about her being a spokesperson for American Express Women's Golf Month, then shared some stories about the Hy-Vee Classic from 2006 in Des Moines and the times we visited at the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, California. Nancy's daughter Ashley is getting married at the Villages in February 2009, so she and Ashley were headed to the Villages after the luncheon to work on wedding plans.

The ADT Championship is being held this November at Trump International in West Palm Beach...I'm looking forward to attending that event in a few short weeks.

Downtown West Palm Beach

Saturday morning Kathy and I walked along the beach before spending the afternoon in downtown West Palm Beach. We ate lunch at Bradley’s on Clematis Street, then headed to the Breaker’s Hotel to check out the historic landmark hotel. When we realized the valet parking was $30, we decided to make our parking fee worth it and walked around much of the hotel, checking out the outdoor recreation areas, inside décor in the various restaurants and hotel shops.

Sunday I had breakfast at the Juno Beach Café before I met Ed and Mallory for golf on the Palmer course. We made it to the 6th hole before we got poured on and decided to call it a day—heading for the clubhouse and a rain check. The rain cleared later in the day but I had already settled in for some NFL football on the couch.

Tomorrow I'm attending a luncheon where Nancy Lopez is being honored, plus dog sitting for Riley and Scout for two nights...should be a good time!

Ryder Cup - Day 3

Today was an absolute thrill to be part of the USA regaining the Ryder Cup. It was great to watch the team play so well in the Singles Matches--winning seven matches en-route to winning the 37th Ryder Cup with 16 1/2 to 11 1/2 points. The celebration on the balcony of the clubhouse was cool--there was champagne flowing everywhere as the corks flew and the crowd chanted U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A! To put a hush to the "Ole" song, the Americans came back with the same tune, but changed the words to "No Way, No Way, No Way, No Way." Lots of red, white and blue and happy people all around Valhalla.

This evening we went downtown Louisville to 4th Street Live for the post Cup block party. It was crazy and I couldn't believe all the people there...makes me wonder what the airport will be like tomorrow morning since everyone stayed in town Sunday night.

Back to West Palm tomorrow! Way to go, Team USA!

Ryder Cup - Day 2

Day 2 at the Ryder Cup was another good day for Team USA...although we started the day with a three point lead over the European Team, we played well today ending the morning Foursome with a score of 7-5 and maintained the two point lead by the end of the day for a 9-7 lead. The USA Team needs 14 1/2 points to capture the Cup while the Euros will need 14 points to retain the Cup. A lot will depend on how both teams play tomorrow in the Singles Matches.

We're hoping for a champagne toast on the 18th green tomorrow afternoon!

Ryder Cup - Day 1

Today began with the Foursome matches in the morning, followed by the Four-Ball matches this afternoon. There's a lot of excitement in the air as the USA Team scored 3 points to the Euro teams 1 point this morning and pulled ahead to end day one with 5 1/2 points vs. 2 1/2 points. When the Learning Center closed at 7 p.m. we raced over to the 18th green to watch the last two groups finish. It's great to see all the fans dressed in red, white and blue and chanting U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!

Stay tuned for Day 2 tomorrow!

Louisville Slugger Museum

Things have been cleaned up at Valhalla and everything is on schedule for the Ryder Cup to begin on Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were practice rounds, with the opening ceremonies this afternoon.

Last night we attended a PGA Magazine party at the Louisville Slugger Museum. It was fun to tour and see how baseball bats are made. All attendees were given personalized Louisville Slugger baseball bats, complete with the Ryder Cup logo. A great keep sake and trinket for my new office!

Everyone is excited for Day 1 of the Ryder Cup tomorrow.

Hurricane Ike visits Louisville

Well--we survived the outskirts of Hurricane Ike yesterday in Louisville. We had a Play Golf America women's golf event scheduled from 1 to 4 pm and fought 40-60 mph winds. At some points there were up to 80 mph wind gusts. We were outside a good portion of the time and it was actually impossible to walk. We watched huge trees on the golf course snap and fall right on the course...they were at least 60 year old trees.

There is power out all over town due to downed power lines. Stop lights are out, restaurants are closed, gas stations, etc. Traffic yesterday was a mess. Our hotel lost power yesterday afternoon at 3:30 pm. At 11 pm we left the Marriott and went to the Brown Hotel (THE hotel in Louisville--on the register of historic places).

Today schools in Louisville are closed and people are urged to stay inside and off the roads. Luckily we have an "off" day at the Ryder Cup but went out to Valhalla to make sure the Learning Center is ready to go for Tuesday morning.

Greetings from Louisville, KY

Today was a fun travel day...for some reason I went northeast to get northwest--left Palm Beach via Philadelphia to get to Louisville. But hey, it's good for piling up the airline frequent flyer miles!

Once I landed, my boss Ron picked me up and we drove around Louisville a little bit. First on our list was Churchill Downs--Home of the Kentucky Derby. The twin spires on top the grandstands are the most recognizable architectural feature of Churchill Downs and are used as a symbol of the track and the Derby. The Kentucky Derby first was held in 1875, the same year Churchill Downs opened.

Racing at Churchill Downs occurs in two meets. The spring meet starts one week before the Derby and continues until early July. The Kentucky Derby is held the first Saturday in May and the Kentucky Oaks is run on Friday, the day before the Derby. A fall meet picks up in late October and closes Thanksgiving weekend in late November.

In addition to the track, clubhouse and stables, Churchill Downs also contains the Kentucky Derby Museum which focuses on the history of the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs. While there were no horses there when we visited, it was still a thrill to walk around and take in the sights!

Ryder Cup prep tomorrow!

Defeat of Jesse James Days

I had a great weekend in Northfield to celebrate Defeat of Jesse James Days. I flew in Thursday and got to Northfield in time for "townie" night on Bridge Square. Besides the usual "fair food" it was fun to see friends/family and spend the night visiting.

Friday I ran some errands, cleaned the house and met Kelsey at Hoffman Photography to order her senior pictures. Seems hard to believe she's a senior, but fun to go through all the senior year things. College visits and completing applications will be next. Friday night we went back downtown for more junk food and spent some time visiting with Tom and Pat Warner...we reminisced about the many vacations we've taken together to Mexico, Hawaii and the Cayman Islands.

Saturday I played golf with Brooke, Lorie, Donna and Barb. Always fun to get a chance to play Northfield Golf Club (my fourth time this summer!) Saturday evening the entire family stayed home for pizza and movie night...a rare commodity these days to get time for all of us to be together.

Sunday I went to church for the dedication of Bethel's new worship space...as everyone says--it's absolutely wonderful. Especially since I hadn't been there in months, it was a real change. Brooke and I went to the parade, then downtown for one more last junk food fix--corn on the cob, a burger and cotton candy!

I took my usual 6 am flight out of MSP to West Palm...pretty uneventful flight landing at 12:30 so I was able to be back at work at 1:15. It will be a crazy week this week as we're all ready to leave for the Ryder Cup on Saturday.

Labor Day Weekend

I've had a fun three-day weekend. Saturday I played in a Patriot Golf Day tournament at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. I was paired with Joe Steranka, the CEO of the PGA and John Linn, the golf course superintendent and Rick Reider, the assistant superintendent. Playing with the CEO has its benefits--we played from the first tee in the shotgun start. The morning began with an opening ceremonies--complete with color guard, marching band and gospel choir. All activities are celebrating the second annual Patriot Golf Day--which generates funds for educational scholarships for families of those disabled or killed in the line of duty. There are 3,650 golf courses across the country hosting similar events this weekend.

Our group shot ten under par and finished in second place. The tournament generated $2,500 for Patriot Golf Day--with additional golf events planned for the rest of the weekend as well.

Sunday I walked along the beach before joining Ed and Darrell for 18 holes on the Champ course at PGA National. After golf I joined two friends for dinner--we cooked chicken and brats on the grill and played Wii.

Monday I walked along the beach again then went to the pool with my iPod and a book to relax for the rest of the day. My friend Susan came over with pizza for dinner and we had hoped to watch the RNC, but Gustav pre-empted the convention.

I have a 2 1/2 day work week as I return to Minnesota for the weekend on Thursday afternoon--just in time to avoid Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike. Never a dull moment in Florida during Hurricane season!

Between storms...

The remains of Tropical Storm Fay are in Northern Florida and all eyes are on the next storm in the Atlantic--Tropical Storm Gustav. I spent the weekend enjoying the Florida sun...Saturday I played in a golf tournament at Binks Forest in Wellington...I played with three friends from the Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA) and we managed a ten under score--good enough for third place in the mixed flight. The course was lots of fun and we had a good time.

Sunday Kathy and I met for breakfast at the Juno Beach Cafe, then walked two miles on the beach. We walked a mile south of the pier, then turned around and walked back to the pier. The weather was so hot that we actually walked along the shore in the water and it felt great. I spent the rest of the day watching the closing ceremonies of the Olympics, getting ready for another week of work and tracking Gustav.

Tropical Storm Fay

The big news here in Florida is Tropical Storm Fay. We left the Keys on Sunday just in time, as the storm hit Key West on Monday afternoon. The storm then tracked north toward the southwest coast of Florida--near Ft. Meyers and Naples. Due to the threat of Tropical Storm Fay, our office was closed today...the Florida version of a Minnesota Snow Day! The weather has been strange all day--lots of rain, wind, then no rain and wind, then more rain, followed by more wind. The winds have gusted up to 60 miles an hour, but no real damage in my neighborhood.

Midway thru the afternoon the storm had moved north of us in Palm Beach Gardens--leaving lots of water and flooding in some places...up to 12" of rain. Thankfully the storm never turned into a hurricane and is headed out to the Atlantic Ocean up north.

Back to the PGA tomorrow!

The Florida Keys

We got up this morning and ate breakfast outside poolside and planned our day. We had planned to take the Conch Tour Train to see the island, but when we got a block from the train station, we opted to rent an electric car for the day to tour all around the island.

We spent the morning taking in all the local sights--the Southernmost Point, Mallory Square, Duval Street, historic Whitehead Street, home to the Hemmingway and Audubon Houses and the Key West Lighthouse. Duval Street is known as the longest main street in the world because it goes from coast to coast - from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico in less than two miles.

After lunch at Cheeseburger Key West, we went back to the hotel to get ready for the beach. We first tried the Atlantic Ocean, but the murky water and sewer smell sent us to the Gulf of Mexico. The water was as warm as a whirlpool--but still a welcome refreshment since the temperature was 97 degrees and the heat index 107.

We ate dinner at the Raw Bar in the historic Seaport before returning to the hotel to watch some Olympics. We learned there is a tropical storm headed toward the Keys so there is an mandatory tourist evacuation for Sunday morning at 8 a.m. We will heed the warning and get up and head home right away. It's been a fun day and a fun weekend!

The Florida Keys

This weekend finds me in the Florida Keys with three friends from work. We took the day off work today and drove south "to the end of the earth." Or at least to the Southern Most point, which is 90 miles from Cuba. We are staying in Key West, which is 247 miles south of West Palm Beach. We will be here for two nights and will take in all the tourist stuff in the morning.

PGA Championship - Day 4

Here I am with the Wanamaker Trophy just a few hours before Padrig Harrington hoisted it on the 18th green. He played great golf today and it's so impressive that he has won three major tournaments in just 13 months. Padrig's amazing back-to-back rounds of 66 helped him edge out Sergio Garcia by two shots. All eyes will be on Padrig at the 2009 Masters and U.S. Open to see if he can win the next two majors.

It's been a long week but we had more than 19,000 consumers come through the PGA Learning Center to take advantage of ten-minute free lessons, free putting, free chipping and the golf simulator.

A quick Happy Birthday to David who celebrates a "big" birthday today! Tomorrow we head back to West Palm to catch up on some sleep before settling back into life at the office.

PGA Championship - Day 3

Today started as a great day--nice and warm and sunny weather in the mid-70s. The rain quickly moved in and play was suspended at 2:16 p.m. Only 25 players had completed the third round and the final three pairings hadn't even started play at the first tee. We kept thinking play would resume, but just when it looked like it was clear up, a second storm moved in. By about 4:30 it started looking good again, only to have a third rain storm come--so play was called for the day at 6:28 p.m.

The third round will conclude Sunday morning at 7:15--with all players returning to their position on the course and the three groups yet to tee off to begin at 7:20, 7:30 and 7:40 from the first tee. Once the third round is completed, play will conclude at 11:50 from the first and tenth tees--with the players going out in threesomes. It will be a day full of golf and many lead changes.

PGA Championship - Day 2

Our week of fun at the 90th PGA Championship continues. My personal highlight of today was a spur-of-the-moment interview on Golf Channel. The crew came to the PGA Learning Center for a quick five minute interview--asked me a couple of questions--then they headed to their truck to edit the footage and show it within two hours. I caught a quick glimpse of it when it aired on Golf Channel...once I get a DVD of it, I'll post it here on the Blog.

It's been fun watching some of the players up close this week. Although play was suspended briefly on Thursday, most of the first round players finished. Friday was a great day with some popular names missing the cut...Davis Love III, John Daly, Zach Johnson, Rich Beem, Fred Couples, Adam Scott, Vijay Singh and Trevor Immelman. Should be a good weekend!

PGA Championship

The long days and short nights continue at the PGA Championship. On Tuesday, the Director of Business Development and I hosted 60 executive business women from the Detroit area for an afternoon of "behind the scenes" action at the PGA Championship. We had lunch at the PGA Chalet overlooking the 18th green--with three guest speakers before touring the Media Center, Merchandise Tent and Learning Center. The highlight of the afternoon was arriving at the Learning Center as David Love III was finishing up a clinic.

Today I had a full day at the Learning Center, with consumers taking advantage of the complimentary lessons from 7 am to 7 pm. This evening I attended the PGA Distinguished Service Award banquet for Dennis Walters. The PGA Distinguished Service Award is the association's highest honor given annually. Dennis was destined for the PGA Tour until an accident in 1974 left him paralyzed from the waist down. Dennis is proof that one must never abandon their dreams--and he has toured for more than 34 years--giving golf shows that are a combination of golf mastery, techniques, trick shots and human inspiration. He gives nearly 90 shows a year, has been to 49 states and has performed more than 2,700 shows. He is truly an inspiration to all.

Tomorrow is round one of the 90th PGA Championship--I hope to catch some action on the course!

The 90th PGA Championship

It's been a busy few days at the PGA Championship at Bloomfield Township, Michigan. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and went to Oakland Hills Country Club. It was neat to walk a few of the holes and get familiar with the course and clubhouse area.

Sunday we went to Oakland Hills University Golf Course for a walk-thru for Monday's Play Golf America event. We made sure our boxes of supplies arrived and everything was set up. In the afternoon we went to Oakland Hills Country Club for a walk-thru at the PGA Learning Center...a 6,000 square foot chalet where there are four hitting bays, a putting green, a chipping area and a golf simulator. This is the area where I'll be working all week--making sure spectators get a great golf experience through our ten-minute free lessons we're offering as well as trying the closest to the pin contest at the simulator.

Monday at Oakland Hills University we had a Community Relations event and hosted a youth clinic from 9 am to noon. The clinic drew more than 200 youth from across the Detroit metro area. There were 20 PGA Professionals from the Michigan Section who helped teach the clinic. In the afternoon, we had a Play Golf America Day where consumers came for a clinic taught by 2008 Distinguished Service Award winner Dennis Walters and an opportunity to demo equipment from Callaway, Cobra, Nike and Taylor Made. The highlight of the day was a second clinic from 2007 PGA Teacher of the Year, Jim Hardy. I had the pleasure of driving Jim to and from the golf course and had a great time visiting with him.

It should be a good week--lots of spectators expected and good weather for most of the week!

Happy 21st Anniversary!

David came to Florida this weekend to visit since it was our 21st anniversary on Friday, July 25th. He was scheduled to arrive on Thursday night at 10:30, but was delayed in Houston due to something mechanical on the plane as well as weather (from Hurricane Dolly) so he finally arrived in West Palm Beach around 12:50 a.m. He only checked his golf clubs, so luggage arrived right away!

Friday night I introduced David to beach therapy...as Ron had arranged for our department to have a get together. Beach therapy involves sitting in beach chairs, digging your feet into the sand, eating snacks and enjoying festive beverages until the sun goes down. Doesn't sound like much but it is quite relaxing after a long week at work. Once it got dark, we went to County Line Pizza for dinner, then to the Legacy Place for Gelato. Quite a night of visiting and eating!

Saturday David and I went to Port St. Lucie to play golf at the PGA Golf Club. My friend Drew from work joined us and we played the Wanamaker Course. Another hot day on the golf course with very little breeze--typical Florida summer golf! At least we had a day with no rain!! Saturday night David and I ate dinner at Season's 52 to celebrate our anniversary...they are known for their changing menu as they only carry items "in season." All menu items are fresh and 400 calories or less--we each had filet mignon that were great--so it was a fun place to try!

Sunday we met Linda and Kathy for breakfast at Juno Beach Cafe (and now David is convinced I don't cook too much down here!) After breakfast we went to PGA National to hang out at the pool. We spent about an hour there before the afternoon rain--but it was still fun to hang out at the hot tub and sip on some pina colodas!

I took David to the airport at noon today for his flight back home. It was a fun weekend to have him come visit. Kelsey arrived home from Montana on Saturday and my parents arrived home from Norway on Sunday night. Glad everyone had a chance to get out and about and return home safely.

Crazy busy at work as we prepare for the PGA Championship next week. I leave Saturday for 10 days in Detroit. Next blog update from the PGA Championship.

Admiral's Cove

I spent the past week fighting a nasty summer cold...started first with the stuffy nose and then progressed into a full blown cough and cold. My beverage of choice this week has been NyQuill Night and Cold medicine!

Saturday was nice in the morning so I headed out on a bike ride to enjoy the day. It was pretty humid so I ended my ride after about seven miles even though I had originally planned to head toward the ocean. It started raining just after I got home, so I watched the Open on TV waiting for the storm to pass. Once it cleared up, I went to the Champ range at PGA National to try out my new Titleist irons. Thanks to the rain earlier, it was super humid, so my practice session lasted only an hour.

Sunday I played golf at Admiral's Cove in Jupiter. My neighbor invited me to join their weekly morning group. I know the head professional, Matt King, as he and I sat next to each other at PGA Level Three school. It was fun to see Matt again and to get a chance to play his course--one of the nicer courses in the area. Sunday afternoon I watched the final round of the Open hoping the Shark would pull off a win, but glad to see Padrig win since I had him for Fantasy Golf.

Brooke returned home early this morning and Kelsey left yesterday for her church youth group trip to Montana. Guess that means that David had one night of peace and quiet home alone!

Back in West Palm

It was another hot and rainy weekend in West Palm Beach. Saturday I went to Juno Beach for a few hours until the rain clouds moved in and I decided to head home. I drove through some light rain that stopped before I got home. So then I decided to hang out at the pool at PGA National--that lasted another hour and a half before more rain. I did manage to get a little bit of sun and decided that two rain storms were enough for one day.

Sunday I played golf on the Squire course with Peter Jones and Ed Carbone. I had never played the Squire course so it was nice to finally get a chance to play there. We finished our round before the late afternoon rain came in so I headed home to catch the rest of the golf tournament on TV.

Brooke left yesterday for Christikon with the church youth group and my parents left for 2 1/2 weeks in Norway...think of all the minutes I'll save on my cell phone this week!!

A Great Week at Home

It was a great to be back in Minnesota for ten days. I packed in lots of fun, visiting and catching up with friends and getting some much needed work done around our house.

Saturday and Sunday as you read, I attended the U.S. Women's Open. A special thanks to my friend Betsy at the LPGA for the week-long tickets and to Fiona at the USGA for the Patty Berg Pavillion tickets! Saturday night we went to Books for their annual Fourth of July post-golf tournament bonfire. Always fun to sit around the Book's bonfires while their friends put so much wood on the fire that small aircraft could land in their prairie.

Tuesday David and I played golf at the Legacy Course in Faribault with Chris and Dick Daymont. We had a fun time--the usual guys vs. the women--and once again the women won and like usual, we never got paid by the guys. We did have dinner after golf at the Depot, so I guess I got paid by not having to cook or do dishes at home!

Wednesday was another day filled with countless trips to the burning pile and filling the garbage cans--good thing Wednesday is garbage day...the cans were emptied and ready to fill again! Wednesday night I visited Turnacliffs (great rhubarb crisp, Rose!) while the Finger girls went to a movie with the Turnacliff boys. Our evening included s'mores in the backyard around the firepit--another Finger/Turnacliff tradition.

Thursday I played golf at Willinger's with Jess and Andy Greenleaf. The weather was perfect in the high 70s with a slight breeze. Fun to see Andy and Jess again. Thursday night David and I had dinner with Don and Jane at our old standby--Outback Steakhouse--followed by our traditional visit to Barnes and Noble after dinner.

Friday I played at Northfield with Lorie, Barb and Jim Penning. We had a great time and cruised right around the course. It was fun to play three different courses while I was home. I passed on going to the fireworks since I could see them from our house and not have to fight the misquitos!

Saturday we cleaned, threw and packed a few more things from the house. In the afternoon I trimmed our bushes and landscaping around the house, while David tuned up the walk mower and weed eater. My mom was in Minneapolis for the day with three friends from her church, so she stopped by briefly on her return trip back to West Des Moines.

While I was home we had one showing so I'm hoping we'll have a few more in the near future and that someone will make an offer on our home.

I left Minneapolis this afternoon and am currently at the Houston airport for three hours before my flight to West Palm. It's been a great week at home yet I'm looking forward to getting back to work and tackling some of my projects.

The U.S. Women's Open - Final Day

Annika Sorenstam's eagle three at the 18th hole.(Photo credit: Getty Images)

Sunday Kelsey and Brooke and I met Lorie, Donna Lynn and Barb Loesch to watch the action. We walked around a little bit before settling in on the grandstands on the 18th green at 11 a.m. We had seats even with the flagstick--about ten rows up--and thought we better grab them when we could as they would fill up during the early afternoon.

We saw everyone finish from the third group of the day until the tournament was over at 6 p.m. Of course the highlight of the weekend was watching Annika's eagle three on the par-5 18th hole. Everyone went crazy when her ball hit the stick and fell in the hole--high fiving and cheering everyone around us. When Annika reached the green, she took her ball out of the cup, kissed it and threw it into the stands about five rows in front of us. We narrowly missed the keepsake of a lifetime.

It was a thrill to watch so many great players up close. The state of Minnesota can now look forward to the PGA Championship next year at Hazeltine Golf Club in August.

The U.S. Women's Open

(Brooke in the lime green tee shirt carrying the standard)

It was a great weekend at the U.S. Women's Open at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, MN. On Saturday, Brooke was the standard bearer for Paula Creamer, Helen Alfredsson and Jeong Jang. Brooke knew with the second to last tee time of the day, she would have leaders or contenders. At one point on Saturday, both Paula and Helen were co-leaders. On the 18th green, Paula signed her golf ball she had used that round and gave it to Brooke--complete with a big Pink Panther logo on it--since her nickname is the Pink Panther. It was a thrill for Brooke to watch her and be "inside the ropes" with three great LPGA players.

We plan to attend again Sunday so it will be a great finish to a great event!

Breakfast at Ikea and another round of golf...

Another sunny and hot weekend in Southern Florida complete with afternoon showers. I have learned to get outside and play golf early in the day for two reasons: 1) It’s cooler in the morning and 2) It rains every afternoon!

Saturday a friend from work and I motored down to Ft. Lauderdale. Pam had never been to Ikea so we decided to go there for breakfast and shopping. On our way back, we drove A1A along the coast from Ft. Lauderdale to Lake Worth. By the time we got back mid-afternoon, the rain and lightening moved in.

We decided to go out to dinner at Smokey Bones and five minutes after we got there, the lights went out. Once they came back on, we were asked by the management to evacuate the building as they saw smoke and had called the fire department. (Good thing the place wasn’t burning down since the fire department arrived 15 minutes later.) Turned out it was a light fixture that shorted and smoked, but it closed the restaurant for a few hours—so we went elsewhere for dinner. Gives new meaning to the name Smokey Bones!

Sunday I played the Champ course in the morning and just as we finished the rain, lightening and thunder arrived. Makes it hard to keep the car clean with rain every day!

I’m off to Minnesota next weekend for ten days at home and I am looking forward to attending the US Women’s Open! More from Minnesota…

Orlando, Disney and Bay Hill

Hard as this may seem, I spent another weekend in Florida on the golf course!

Saturday I played in our PGA HQ staff league at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, playing the Wannamaker course. Our event was a two person net best ball and Kathy Wilkes and I scrapped out a three-under par 69—only to get lapped by a 63 and a 66. I shot a three-over 75 and won four skins, earning myself some gas money for my weekend road trip.

After golf, I headed north on the Turnpike to Orlando to see my cousin Ed and his family at Disney World. I hadn’t seen my cousin for ten years and his mom, my aunt, since about 1981. We had a great time talking and catching up over dinner and sharing stories from years ago. After dinner we watched the third round of the US Open since it was on TV during prime-time! Good thing Ed’s a golf nut like me!

Sunday Ed and I played Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Golf Club. We were told the King was in Pennsylvania for Father’s Day, but we still enjoyed seeing all the memorabilia in the clubhouse. There were tons of signed photographs of Arnold with all kinds of celebrities—Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, Michael Jordan, Celon Dion and golfers Tiger Woods, Sam Sneed, Nick Faldo and Nancy Lopez. We also saw the Master Card trophy that Tiger won this year. Lots of history inside and outside the clubhouse.

Before we played I noticed LPGA Tour Player Suzanne Petterson putting on the practice green. She is a member there and was practicing for the upcoming Wegman’s tournament in Rochester, NY, followed by the U.S. Women’s Open in Edina, MN. Being the shy person that I am, I walked up to her and introduced myself and visited with her for a few minutes. We asked her to join us, but she was there to practice and take a lesson. She is ranked #3 ranked player on the LPGA Tour so it was cool to talk to her.

The course was a slight disappointment as it wasn’t in very good shape—but that said, I shot a one-over par 37 on the front side from the men’s tees. The back side wasn’t as nice to me, but I carded a 77, so I was pleased. We basically had the course to ourselves so we cruised around trying to beat an incoming rain storm. (Welcome to Florida summer afternoons!)

Following a quick stop to Downtown Disney for Pizza Uno, I headed south to Palm Beach Gardens to catch the end of the US Open on TV.

Another weekend with 45 holes of golf

Friday I drove from Palm Beach Gardens two hours to Naples, FL for an EWGA Pro-Am tournament at the Naples Ritz-Carlton and the Tiburon Golf Club. The weekend kicked-off with a silent auction and party for all participants at the Ritz-Carlton. The tournament began Saturday morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun, followed by a lunch back at the Ritz. My team had very few stellar shots and finished one over par with a 73. Our score earned us “Most honest team” honors and a sleeve of three tennis balls…our yellow lab, Roxy will love the prize!

Sunday I played 18 holes at the Champ course at PGA National before going across the street for lunch and 9 more holes at Mirasol. The hot pastrami hand-carved sandwich was awesome, however, with temps in the 90s and humid, I could tell Sunday night I had played TOO many holes of golf this weekend. Looking for another beach therapy weekend. With the Florida heat in full swing, the place to be on weekends is near or in the water!

Finger takes 33rd at state

From the June 5, 2008 Northfield News

By JEFF WALD

COON RAPIDS — Brooke Finger couldn’t have predicted a much better ending to her spring golf season than Wednesday’s final round at the Class AAA Girls State Golf Tournament.

The freshman carded two birdies, and for the most part, stayed out of trouble on the way to firing her lowest score of the season. Finger shot an 8-over par 81 to finish with a two-day 171, which placed 33rd overall in a field of 88 players.

Moorhead’s Ali Nelson took medalist honors with a two-day score of 150, which included a 1-under par 72 Wednesday. New Prague’s Steffi Neisen, who was in the lead after shooting a first-round 71, shot 82 on Wednesday to finish in a tie four fourth at 153. Woodbury won the team championship with a two-day 678. Forest Lake was second at 692.

It was fitting for Finger to end the spring with her best score of the season on the state’s biggest stage, especially after shooting a 90 on Tuesday that could’ve been lower.

“It was a fantastic day, she just played wonderfully,” said Raiders coach Brian Stevens. “For her to bounce back, she’s such a determined golfer. She made some shot selections on Tuesday that were based on trying to make her best score. Wednesday, she never had herself in a whole lot of trouble. For her to take 33rd at the state tournament as a freshman is a huge accomplishment.”

“I missed a par putt on No. 18 for 80, but it was a good round,” Finger said. “It was definitely a fun way to end the season. I kept pretty focused and didn’t have a number in my head that I wanted to shoot. It was a pretty decent score. I was glad that I didn’t shoot high like the day before, it showed what I can do.”

Finger started Wednesday with a 1-over par 38 on the West Course. She hit six of seven fairways on the side and had two birdies. The round also included 32 putts.

“Her play on the West Course was unbelievable,” Stevens said. “There’s three par-5s on that side, and she played them in 2-under par. It was a thing of beauty to watch. She just ate that side up and was laser-focused on that side.”

“My tee ball wasn’t the greatest, but my chipping and putting really saved me,” Finger said. “I came back with my irons, tried to get on in regulation and have a putt for par.”

It looked like things might go south as Finger made the turn. Her first three holes on the East Course consisted of two bogeys and a double bogey. What followed were three pars and three bogeys.

“She got to a point where she had a chance to break 80 in a state tournament, so maybe she didn’t pay as much attention to executing shots,” Stevens said. “When you get to that point, you hope this great round isn’t going to get away from her. She just held it together really well, and it was a testament to her. Things unraveled a little bit on her on Tuesday, and she kept things together.”

The key to Finger’s round in Stevens’ mind was the par-5 No. 6 on the East Course, Finger’s 15th hole of the day. Her tee shot went in the water, but she regrouped and saved a bogey.

“It was her big hole of the day,” Stevens said. “It was a fantastic bogey after a tough tee shot. I was more impressed by it than the birdies. I knew after it that this was going to be a pretty special round for her.”

“I started to think about what my end score would be, that’s what cost me on those couple holes. I didn’t know initially that my drive went into the water, and when I got up there I was pretty disappointed. I just had to get my next shot somewhere close to the green so I could chip on and two-putt for bogey.”

It’s a nice way for Finger to end the season, especially considering that the Raiders were a couple shots from getting the team to the state tournament. Stevens said the potential is there, and that’s the goal for next spring.

“We’re hopeful that this will propel some of the other kids on the team to want to get there,” Stevens said. “We were two shots away from the team going, and if we continue to improve, there’s no reason why we can’t do it as a team.”

A decent start

From the June 3, 2008 Northfield News

By JEFF WALD

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Take away two holes, and the first round of the Class AAA State Golf Tournament was a complete success for Northfield freshman Brooke Finger.

Finger shot a 17-over par 90 on Tuesday at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn., and is in a group of eight players that are tied for 48th place in the 88-player field.

New Prague’s Steffi Neisen shot a 2-under par 71 Tuesday and has the individual lead heading into today’s final round. Woodbury shot a 345 in the team competition and has a one shot lead over Forest Lake.

For Finger, one quadruple bogey on each side prevented her from breaking 90 in the first round of her first state tournament. Turn each of those into a par and she fires an 82, which would be in a tie for 17th.

“I got off the 18th green and I was pretty upset,” said Finger. The ninth hole on the East Course (her 18th of the day) was one of two 8s on her scorecard. “I didn’t really know how good my score was going to hold up. Once I saw the rest of the scores, it was a little better. But I definitely left a few shots out there.”

“For her first competitive round at a state tournament, she played solid,” said Raiders coach Brian Stevens. “There are two holes she’d like to have back. She hit nine fairways and hit eight greens in regulation. She was on the three par-5s on the West Course in regulation. It was a good learning experience for her.”

One of the hardest shots for any golfer in their first state tournament is their first tee shot.

Finger said she was nervous, but the results didn’t show it. She nailed a drive into the right half of the fairway and ended up with a bogey on the hole.

“She hit a great drive on the first hole,” Stevens said. “She put it right where she needed to, and that first hole is about 380 yards. Bogey is a great score there.”

“I was a little nervous,” Finger said. “I’m not used to having parents and other spectators around watching. It wasn’t all that bad, it was just different. I was just glad I hit a good drive.”

If the general pressure of playing at state wasn’t enough, the group suffered a 20-minute delay during the round. One of the players in Finger’s group needed a ruling on the course, and it took considerable time to get an official to the situation.

“It affected Brooke, but it took everyone out of their rhythm,” Stevens said.

“That was hard, especially because I like to play fast,” Finger said. “It probably affected me more than it should have.”

Finger finished with a 10-over par 47 on the West Course and a 7-over par 43 on the East Course for her 90. The round included 35 putts.

“She made a lot of four to five footers for par,” Stevens said.

She finished with eight pars, seven bogeys, one double bogey and two quadruples in the round.

Finger’s first quadruple came on her seventh hole of the round. Her tee shot was close a tree and water hazard. She got the ball up in the air too high, hit the tree and the ball went into the hazard.

“I had one blow-up hole on each side, and it’s pretty much what cost me both sides,” Finger said. “I wasn’t expecting to be among the contenders, but I could’ve played a little better. I’m just going to go out tomorrow and play. I’m not going to think about what I need to shoot to get in a certain spot. I’m going to play smart, that’s for sure. It’s a course you can’t be too aggressive on.”

Finger will tee off at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday in her final round of the high school season.

Another hot weekend

This weekend saw record high temperatures in Southern Florida. Temperatures were in the low 90s so being inside air conditioned was the preferred activity. Saturday we had our company picnic at Lion Country Safari and the animals were just as hot and tired as our employees.

Sunday I had beach therapy from 11 am to 4 pm--grabbed a new book, my iPod, sunscreen and lawn chair for a day at the beach. Today marks the official start of the 2008 Hurricane Season--I have my pantry well stocked with food and beverages, flashlights, batteries, first aid kit and other various required supplies. Hopefully I won't need those items, but I'm ready nevertheless.

More updates this week from the Minnesota State High School Golf Tournament.

Finger gears up for state tourney

From the May 31, 2008 Northfield News

By JEFF WALD

NORTHFIELD — It's not quite the way she envisioned it, but Brooke Finger will tee it up in her first state golf tournament on Tuesday at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

The Northfield freshman will be the lone representative from the Northfield girls golf team competing this week. The Raiders finished a close second on Tuesday at the Section 1AAA Championships, shooting a 688 to finish just two shots behind champion Lakeville North. Finger will be the second Raider golfer in the last three years to compete at the state tournament. Becca Langer got there two years ago as a junior.

"I’m pretty excited," said Finger, who is a freshman and is in her second season of varsity golf. "It's kind of shocking since I'm so young. But I wish the rest of the team could still be playing. That was our goal."

"This accomplishment shows how far our program has come in the last couple years," said Raiders coach Brian Stevens. "The hard work is paying off. A lot of the girls are playing competitive golf during the summer, and I didn't know if that would happen right away. Brooke has worked really hard to get there."

Finger shot an 82 in Tuesday's final round to finish with a two-day score of 165. It was only one shot off the individual medalist honors. She said she knew the state tournament was a good possibility when she got off the course.

"I kind of knew I had a good chance with my score," Finger said. "I just tried to focus on not blowing up anywhere and not letting any big scores bother me."

Finger will start the Class AAA Girls State Tournament Tuesday morning, but will get her first look at Bunker Hills on Monday in a practice round. The biggest hurdle so far: She has to finish school so she can play golf next week.

"The biggest logistical challenge is that she has to get done early with her finals," Stevens said. "Most kids will have finals next week, but she'll have to be out of school, so she had to get most of that done this week."

As for preparation, Bunker Hills will likely play at least 700 yards longer than any course the Raiders played this year. The East/West course, which Finger will be compete on, plays to just over 5,800 yards. Finger will start practice in town by playing Northfield Golf Club from the men's tees, then play Bunker Hills on Monday.

"I'll play from the whites or blues at Northfield to get used to the distance," Finger said. "I'll also take a lot of notes on Monday and try to learn a lot about the course."

"She'll have to play it like it's her first round in the tournament," Stevens said. "She can't play three or four balls because she'll be with other players. She'll get a good feel for what's out there. The biggest thing will be her wedge play. She's long off the tee, but there's some par-4s out there where she won't be able to hit the green in two. She'll need to hit a wedge within six feet to give herself a chance for par."

Stevens said Finger will stay in Coon Rapids for the entire tournament, as opposed to commuting every day, like Langer did two years ago. Expectations for the freshman are realistic as she will play for the first time against against the best all-around competition in the state.

"I've never played in a tournament like this," Finger said. "I'm sure I'll be nervous, but I'm not going to treat it different than any other tournament. I'm not going to worry about where I finish."

"We're going to try and simplify things for her," Stevens said. "We want her to go out there and have fun. If she hits the ball well and continues her good short game, it's realistic for her to finish in the top half or third of the field."

Memorial Day Weekend

I had a great weekend back in Minnesota. Friday I played 18-holes of golf with Lorie Bergman and Vic & Dot Swanson. Since I didn't get a chance to visit Swanson's while they were in Bradenton this winter, it was fun to play golf and have a few laughs on the golf course. Friday night I joined my parents at the St. Olaf Alumni Awards dinner where my mom was the recipient of the St. Olaf Distinguished Service Award. She is also celebrating her 50th class reunion so it's a fun weekend of events for my parents on campus.

Saturday was a day of countless trips to Menards (five all day!) as we continue to get our house ready to be put on the market. We put the finishing touches on the remodeled kitchen--I painted while David finished installing a new sink and counter top.

Sunday I attended St. Olaf Commencement as my mom participated in Commencement exercises as an Alumni Award winner. It was fun to see many friends and former golf team members graduate.

Monday morning I played golf with Lorie, Donna and Barb. Marcia came down to ride nine holes and visit with me--she is on the DL with a minor golf injury--hoping to be swinging again soon. After a quick lunch, I packed and headed to the airport for my return flight to Florida. (Yes, another delayed flight in Detroit, getting us into the airport at 1:15, luggage at 2 am and home by 3 pm) Some day I'll learn to fly earlier in the day and not continue to arrive during prime sleeping time!)

Today was day two of the section golf tournament and the Northfield Girls' Team fell just two strokes shy of advancing to State. Kelsey shot an 86 and Brooke an 82. Brooke's two day total of 165 gave her a second place finish for individuals so she will be playing in her first State Golf Tournament. Hats off to the Raiders on a great season!

Always fun to get home to spend time with the family and see my friends.

36 hours in Florida

The past two days were crazy. On Tuesday Carol Mann and I had lunch at Oak Hill with many of the players in the Senior PGA Championship field--Scott Hoch, Kenny Knox, Fuzzy Zoeller, Jerry Pate, Andy North and many others. My flight back to West Palm was delayed (starting to be a reoccurring theme when I travel) so rather than arriving at 11 pm Tuesday night, we arrived at 2 am Wednesday morning. In addition to arriving three hours late, I was told my luggage was still back in Newark. Great.

My luggage was delivered at 5 pm on Wednesday and I literally unpacked, did laundry and re-packed as I left again on Thursday afternoon for Memorial Day weekend.

Quick update from the first round of the Section golf tournament--Northfield is eight shots behind Lakeville North--Brooke had 83 and Kelsey a 91. Day two is Tuesday--more from Minnesota this weekend.

A Day with Carol Mann

I arrived in Rochester, New York yesterday for the PGA Senior Championship. Today we had a women's golf clinic sponsored by the Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA)for 40 women at Genesee Valley Golf Course. Our special guest clinician was LPGA Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame member, Carol Mann, who is in town to receive the 2008 PGA First Lady of Golf award.

The day began with a luncheon, then we ventured out in the 48 degree weather to hold a two hour clinic. (Reminded me of my collegiate coaching days with lousy spring and fall weather.) It was amazing to watch Carol teach and to see firsthand what makes her such a great instructor--while being able to assist with teaching the clinic. She is so deserving of the First Lady of Golf award for all she has done for women and the game of golf as a player, teacher, broadcaster and all her work to ensure the passage of Title IX.

This evening we went to dinner and had time to hear more of Carol's stories about life on the LPGA tour and all she continues to do in golf. While at dinner, I received a call from Kelsey and Brooke that the Northfield Girls' Golf team won the Missota Conference golf tournament for the first time in 21 years! The team beat Red Wing by just a few shots to take conference. Kelsey and Brooke each shot 85 and both earned All-Conference honors! Way to go Raiders!

Greetings from the Big Apple!

Today was an opportunity to check off another "to-do" from my "Wish List of Places to Visit" as I spent the day in New York City. My day began with a train ride from New Jersey to Penn Station--not realizing I was at Madison Square Garden when I surfaced from the subway! Pretty cool. I walked from 31st Street north to 42nd Street to purchase a CitySights bus ticket at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. Then I hopped on top of the open-air, double-decker bus to take in the sights of New York City. I saw the Empire State building, Macy's, Ground Zero, Wall Street, Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, the Statue of Liberty, United Nations Building, Trump International and Rockefeller Plaza.

Once the downtown tour was done, I changed to another bus for the uptown tour through Central Park and Harlam. I got off at the Plaza Hotel to go inside and see everyone dressed up for Tea at the Plaza. I also checked out the Ed Sullivan Theatre, where the Late Show with David Letterman is filmed--and of course, the Hello Deli, next door! I feel like I saw two days worth of stuff--crammed into one afternoon!

I had a quick dinner at the Olive Garden in Times Square, before walking a few blocks to the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street to see Mary Poppins at 8 p.m. What a thrill is was to see a Broadway show as well! After the show, I walked back to the Penn Station and took the train back to New Jersey. What a day it was!

Tomorrow I'm off to Rochester, NY for the Senior PGA Championship. Happy Birthday to Brooke, who turned 15 today!

American Express VIP Event

Today I helped host a VIP event for American Express at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The day began with breakfast and Dana White, an editor from Golf For Women Magazine speaking. Plans then called for a golf clinic for the attendees from 9 a.m. until noon, however, due to the constant downpour of rain, we quickly switched to "Plan B" and hosted the clinic in the Ballroom of the country club. The clinic was led by PGA/LPGA member Suzy Whaley, along with five other LPGA Professionals. (The photo above includes L to R, LPGA Vice President Betsy Clark, Le Ann, Suzy Whaley and Brooke Hollins from the LPGA.)

After the clinic, we drove 35 miles to the LPGA Sybase Classic at Upper Montclair Country Club for lunch in the VIP hospitality club. The rain continued and the tournament was suspended for the day due to weather. It was still fun to see the course and some of the players (Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa, Paula Cramer, etc.)

Hopefully the rain will stop so the tournament can conclude this weekend!

PGA Free Lesson Month-Day

Today my colleague, Kirk Douglas, PGA and I helped promote PGA Free Lesson Month by hosting free 10-minute lessons in the parking lot of our PGA Headquarters office building. We had two inflatable nets and our coworkers were able to sign up for 10-minute free lessons. We taught from 9 to noon and again from 1 to 4 p.m. In all, between the two of us, we gave 72 lessons today! The golfing ability ranged from seasoned golfer to absolute new beginner--so it was a lot fun to help our coworkers and to see people get 'hooked' on golf. The weather cooperated with the temperature around 85 and some clouds--much nicer than the low 90s we've had earlier this week. (Although the freshly black-topped parking lot felt like we were giving lessons on the a tarmac!)

Tomorrow I'm off to New Jersey for a sponsor event at the LPGA Sybase Classic Tournament at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, NJ. More from the Northeast!

Breakfast with the President

Saturday we had another PGA HQ staff outing at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. Before golf, Kathy Wilkes and I had breakfast with PGA of America President, Brian Whitcomb and his wife at the PGA Golf Club. Brian was in town for the Minority Championships held at the PGA Golf Club. We shared funny golf stories while eating, before Brian joined us on the practice range before we played. Our event was a modified Stableford and my partner and I finished runner-up (sounds much better than saying we finished second!)

After golf we returned to West Palm and some of us had dinner and hung out at Panama Hatties...a tiki bar on the water complete with a sand beach. It was a perfect night to just sit outside and re-live the shots on the golf course from that day.

Today Linda and Kathy and I went to the Sugarcane Bistro for Mother's Day buffet. Tons of good food and more fun stories and laughs. The rest of the day I just ran errands and watched golf on TV...fun to see Sergio win at The Players.

Busy week this week with PGA Free Lesson Day on Wednesday and a trip to New Jersey on Thursday...more later!

Another busy weekend

It was another busy four days in Minnesota. Lorie and I managed to squeeze in a round of golf on Thursday before my parents arrived for an over-night visit before attending Honor's Day activities at St. Olaf. It was great to see my parents since I hadn't seen them since December, when I spent a night there en-route to driving my car to Florida.

Friday night David and I went out to dinner with Kevin and Marilyn Phelps. (You'll notice a pattern in my return trips home includes dinner out with friends every time!) Saturday I joined ten fellow female PGA Professionals from the Minnesota section as we taught a junior girls' golf clinic at Rush Creek...although the temperature was in the low 50s, the sun helped warm us up and we were able to be outside. There were about 200 girls attending the morning-long clinic--always fun to teach the next generation of golfers, especially when they're girls.

Sunday I went to church and packed a few things before heading to the airport for my 2 pm flight. Always good to get home and see friends and family...I'm headed back for Memorial Day weekend in three short weeks.

Hello from Houston

Just a quick note from the Houston airport as I wait for my connecting flight to Minneapolis. I'm headed home for four days to help with a Play Golf Minnesota Day at Rush Creek in Maple Grove. This will be the second year that the Minnesota PGA Section has teamed up with the Minnesota Women's Golf Association to provide a junior girls' golf clinic and also my second year as an instructor.

More later from the Gopher State...

The Breakers

Today I joined three friends to play The Breakers Rees Jones course--formerly the Breakers West. It's located ten miles west from the famous Breakers Resort on Palm Beach, and home of the Ocean Course. I don't think I've ever played on greens that were so quick--the head professional told us they measured 14.2 on the stimp meter. (Most greens are between 9 and 11!) The course layout was great--with lots of water and some generous landing areas. I seemed to visit the sand a bit too much--I think I tallied six bunkers today. Still it was a thrill to play even if the scorecard didn't reflect a lower score.

Things are busy at work...I'm getting ready to head back to Minnesota this week for a Play Golf Minnesota day at Rush Creek in Maple Grove on Saturday. We're also winding down on PGA Free Fitting & Trade-Up Month for April and ready to launch into PGA Free Lesson Month for May. I'm also working on collateral materials for American Express Women's Golf Month in June--trying to get some ads placed in magazines, posters and flyers printed, etc. so we're ready to mail materials to the facilities hosting Women's Golf Month activities. Never a dull moment at the PGA of America!

Raider Girls' Golf Update: Brooke finished medalist in a home meet in Northfield this week with an 82! Way to go, Brooke!!

Back at PGA National

This weekend I enjoyed another Florida weekend. I spent the day at Juno Beach yesterday--packed my lunch, cooler, iPod and a book to sit on the beach and relax. The water temperature is quite nice and feels good after sitting in the sun for a long time. It's always fun to just sit and people watch, too.

Today I played golf with two colleagues, Mallory and Jon, at PGA National on the Palmer course. We cruised right along and played in about 3 1/2 hours. The courses are definitely less crowded. Starting May 1 we have reciprocity with near-by courses such as Mirasol, Ibis, Jupiter Country Club, Frenchman's Reserve, Admirals Cove and Jonathan's Landing--some of the very elite private clubs in Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter. I know some of my co-workers and I will be sure to take advantage of that!

Greetings from Washington D.C.

Today I was up bright and early for a 7 am flight to Washington DC. I will be administering a golf clinic tomorrow for 60+ women who are in town for the National Women's Foodservice Forum. They have a golf tournament scheduled for 110 participants and another 60 new golfers who will participate in our golf clinic.

I spent the afternoon checking out the sights in the nations capitol--Washington Monument, Capitol, Smithsonian Institute and the cherry blossoms. The weather is warm and sunny, then cold and rainy--all in one day.

This evening I went to the Basilica of the National Shrine to see the Northfield High School Concert Choir as they sang and participated in the 5:30 Mass. It was fun to see the high school students I knew and the many parents who were chaperones.

Tomorrow is the Play Golf America Day for the Women's Foodservice Forum, then back to the Reagan airport for a flight back to West Palm. Looks like I'll be in Florida for two or three weeks before I travel again.

PS. The Raider Girls' Golf team is in full swing back in Northfield...playing in some pretty awful spring weather, but it's fun to watch their results.
